The short version

Who we are

Ozen is an independent, free and open-source project, made in Israel. For any question about privacy, email arbelonson@gmail.com.

Everything on this page can be checked: the code of the app and of this website is public on GitHub.

This website

What we collect

Nothing. The site uses no cookies, no local storage, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels and no fingerprinting. Its fonts and scripts are served from this site, so your browser doesn't contact any other company while you read it.

Our host

The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub says it logs the internet (IP) address of every visitor, to keep its service secure. We don't receive those logs and can't see them. GitHub, and the content-delivery companies it works with, handle them under the GitHub General Privacy Statement. Your visit may be processed in the United States.

Links to other sites

When you follow a link to GitHub, TikTok or another site, that site's own privacy policy and cookies apply.

If you email us

We see your email address and your message. We use them only to answer you, and we delete them if you ask.

The Ozen app

With the phone's own speech model

The sound is turned into words on the phone itself. Nothing you say leaves the phone, and the app has no analytics or usage-reporting code.

The app goes online only for things that aren't your words:

Apple's speech engine

By default, Ozen asks Apple's engine to work on the phone. If your phone can't do that for your language, you can turn on Allow processing on Apple's servers in Settings. It's off unless you turn it on, and while it's on, the sound goes to Apple.

With an online captioning service

You choose the service and paste in your own key. The phone talks to that service directly, never through a server of ours. The service gets the sound, and the names and words you listed so it can spell them. What it does with them is up to that service's own terms and privacy policy, so please read them. On some free plans, the company's staff may review what is sent.

With your home computer

If you set up Ozen on a computer of your own, the phone sends it the microphone sound while captions are on and gets the words back. The computer doesn't save the sound or the captions. Its log notes the phone's network address and how many minutes of sound it handled, but not the words.

On your home network the connection isn't encrypted. Ozen only allows that for a computer on your home network or your own private Tailscale network. A connection from outside the home has to use an encrypted (wss://) address.

What stays on your phone

WhatHow long
Saved conversations (you can turn saving off)Until you delete them, or automatic deletion does
Settings, names, alert words, and saved speakers' voice printsUntil you change or delete them
Keys for online services and the home computer's pairing code, in the phone's KeychainUntil you delete them
Short sound clips, only when you mark a problemUp to 5, the newest kept
A short journal of what the captions didAbout 500 lines; older lines drop off

A voice print is a short list of numbers that describes a voice. The recording itself isn't kept. Saved conversations and settings are included in the phone's iCloud or computer backup when backup is on.

Everything can be deleted inside the app. The app's privacy guide shows where each delete button is. Deleting the app removes its files, but the phone can keep Keychain items, so delete your keys and pairing code first.

Diagnostics reports

The app can build a report about its own state, to help fix problems. Nothing sends it by itself. It goes out only if you share it, copy it or send it to your home computer, and you can read it first. It leaves out the sound, your conversations, speaker names, voice prints, your word lists and your keys.

App stores

Ozen isn't in the App Store or Google Play yet. If it is published there, Apple and Google may collect their own information about downloads and crashes under their own policies.

Children

This website and the app aren't aimed at children, and they collect no personal information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

We hold no personal information about you, so there's nothing for us to show, correct or delete. If you emailed us and want that email deleted, write to arbelonson@gmail.com.

Changes to this policy

If anything changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Every earlier version is kept in the site's public history.
